Chladni Plate Demonstration
Chladni Plate Demonstration
The Chladni Plate is an elegantly simple apparatus that is fun to work with but which is also important from the educational standpoint. It teaches much about the power of sound to create form from formlessness. Named after German physicist and musician, Ernst Chladni (b. 1756 d. 1827), sometimes known as the 'father of acoustics', it consists of a metal plate (typically brass) centre-held on a support stand. The plate is strewn with sand or salt grains and one of its edges is 'played' with a bow. The friction of the bow hairs against the edge excites the plate at one of its natural resonant frequencies. By bowing the plate at one position, quickly followed by a second position, it is possible to create a large number of geometric patterns, representing analogue mixes of the plate's resonant frequencies.

Leave a comment letting me know what your favorite pattern is. My favorite is 5284 hz (at 3:08).
So this experiment is the Chladni plate experiment. I used a tone generator, a wave driver (speaker) and a metal plate attached to the speaker. First add sand to the plate then begin playing a tone. Certain frequencies vibrate the metal plate in such a way that it creates areas where there is no vibration. The sand "falls" into those areas, creating beautiful geometric patterns. As the frequency increases in pitch the patterns become more complex.

Masaru Emoto - Water Experiments
"The words themselves actually emit a unique vibration that the water is sensing. When water is shown a written word, it receives it as vibration, and expresses the message in a specific form, like a visual code for expressing words. Water exposed to the words," Thank you" formed beautiful geometric crystals, no matter what the language. But water exposed to, "...you fool" and other degrading words resulted in obviously broken and deformed crystals. When a complete geometric crystal is formed, water is in alignment with nature and the phenomena we call life. The words, gratitude and love, form the fundamental principles of the laws of nature and the phenomenon of life."

Amazing Water & Sound Experiment
Amazing Water & Sound Experiment
This is an amazing water and sound experiment you can try at home. Tape a vinyl hose to a speaker, run water through it, produce a 24 Hz sine wave, and turn up the volume. Most of us know what a sine wave is from trigonometry. Translate that to the movement of the speaker. Your brain's (eye's) frequency is much higher than that of a camera, so you must use a 24 FPS camera in order to see this stroboscopic effect. The water appears to be frozen in time. If you increase the frequency you get a slow motion forward effect. Decrease the frequency for a slow motion reverse effect. I used an amplified 12" infinity kappa at 700 watts. I must credit the idea of the speaker and water to Brusspup. Thanks.

All you'll need is:
12" speaker
Clear vinyl hose
Sine wave generating software (23, 24, and 25 Hz)
Duct tape
A camera that is capable of filming in 24 frames per second
Non-Newtonian Fluid on a Speaker Cone
Non-Newtonian Fluid on a Speaker Cone
Corn starch is a shear thickening non-Newtonian fluid meaning that it becomes more viscous when it is disturbed. When it's hit repeatedly by something like a speaker cone it forms weird tendrils. The video was shot at 30 fps and the speaker cone was vibrating at 30 Hz which is why there is no blur. This is the original video with the actual sound of the speaker.

The music of Anders Holte & Cacina Meadu, made visible by CymaScope instrument.
This beautiful, state-of-the-art cymatics video is the voice of Anders Holte and the music of Cacina Meadu made visible by CymaScope instrument. Anders & Cacina are gifted artistes and their music is loved internationally.
They recording was made for an online event, hosted by Tsipi Raz, director of "The 1 Field" documentary. Anders & Cacina feature in the documentary, along with acoustic-physics scientist, John Stuart Reid, who invented the CymaScope instrument. At it’s heart, the CymaScope principle is simple: Sound vibrations are imprinted onto the surface of pure water, rather like making a fingerprint visible on glass. The surface of water offers an exquisitely sensitive membrane to sonic periodicities, and the CymaScope transforms these motions into geometric water wavelet patterns, thus creating accurate models of the sound—a new scientific and artistic tool for the 21st century. In the video the blue periphery represents Cacina's haunting keyboards made visible, while the inner imagery represents Anders' rich and resonant voice made visible. When viewing the beautiful CymaScope imagery you may wish to imagine the effect that this gorgeous music has on your visceral waters, and on the surface membrane of every cell in your body. Operating the CymaScope in this video is James Stuart Reid, son of John Stuart Reid.
